New Camera

I had my previous digital camera stolen (which was 4 years old), so I bought a Canon Rebel XTi.  Its a digital SLR, and i'm pretty psyched about it.  I really have no idea what I'm doing, but I hope it helps me capture some pretty good photos.

I have a Nikon D50. Right now I think Nikon is ahead. I would have suggested a D40x. But Cannons are ok too.

I have had a Rebel XT for a few years now and love it. With all due respect, I don’t think the camera bodies really make that much difference in the digital SLR market. Especially when you compare great names like nikon and cannon, its all about the lens! I do wish Cannon would sell the rebel bodies with 50mm normal lenses instead of the zoom. I bet I use the 50mm 80% of the time.

Yo Amsler, you don’t need the "with all due respect" to voice your opinion. We’re all friends here right?

Anyway, I think there is a constant seesaw battle with SLRs between Nikon and Canon. Right now, the latest Nikon bodies have an edge. For example, the d300 was just named camera of the year:

Fair enough, but consider this example.

If you put a 50mm (f/1.4) prime lens on your D50 and on the D300, it would be hard to pick which photos came from which camera.

However, if you attach a 50mm (f/1.4) prime on your D50 and a 28-80mm zoom (f/4) on the D300. Your D50 will produces far better photos.

I am not suggesting that the camera body does not make a difference, but rather that the lens is more important.

Interesting examples. As they say, the devil is in the details. The lenses which have low f stops will open up wider and let more light in which will allow you to stay in a lower ISO setting which will in turn allow sharper images. But the new Nikon sensors featured on the most recent cameras have significantly decreased noise levels at high ISO settings. Thus, it is possible that they can make a poor lens look better. And of course, a good lens to look even better.
